Living From Hand to Mouth?

Welcome back, folks! In today's post, you will be exposed to a hot topic regarding the teacher's job in itself. It is a subject that has been in the news a few times recently and it happens to be a source of debate for many people. With that said, here is an interesting article that explains the situation very well:

Why Doesn't Society Pay Teachers What They Are Worth?

(Source: LUCKWALDT, Jen Hubley, For the Love of the Job: Does Society Pay Teachers What They Are Worth? (consulted this website on December 3rd, 2021), [Online],  URL addresshttps://www.payscale.com/data-packages/most-and-least-meaningful-jobs/teacher-pay-versus-job-meaning)

This article showcases an interesting and quite controversial subject: money. It gives many details on teachers' salaries from many areas in the United States and highlights a sad reality, which is that some teachers are criminally underpaid. It is a very useful read for any future teachers, as it is important for them to be aware of this situation before they begin to study in this field, as it has some repercussions that might scare some people off (such as the fact they'll need to pay attention to their income/advances ratio).

Personal thoughts

In my opinion, I really believe teachers are underpaid for the job they do. Many people would like to be teachers because they are passionate about the field, and most of these people would do an amazing job, but unfortunately, many of them are scared to apply for this profession because of the fact the salary is too low. Teaching is a very important job and it is crucial in the development of our society. It also requires a lot of studies (at least a bachelor's degree and, sometimes, also a master's degree), but it pays way less than other domains where the exact same schooling is required (such as engineering). I really think this aspect of the career impedes many teachers to fulfill their true potential, as most of them have to quit early on in their careers because of financial difficulties (either that or the fact some of them have to find a second and sometimes third jobs in order to adequately provide for the needs of their family). With that said, I think a salary boost would not only encourage people to study in the field but it would also mean good teachers could now be way more dedicated to their job, as they could be able to share their passion without having to worry about the financial side of it anymore.

  1. Hey Jonathan,
Teachers are truly essential. They are the people who educate our future doctors and innovators. I think they should be paid much more than they currently are. Thanks for sharing these interesting articles.
